Founded in 1965 from the former Templer Barracks, Kenyatta University initially operated as Kenyatta College, offering secondary and teacher training education. It later evolved into Kenyatta University College in 1970 under the University of Nairobi, and attained full university status in 1985. Since then, Kenyatta University has continuously aimed to maintain and enhance its position as a leading institution in Kenya.

It initially focused on secondary and teacher training education, transitioning to offer broader undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Education, Science, and Arts.
Kenyatta University boasts a robust sports infrastructure catering to both recreational and competitive needs. Facilities include multiple soccer pitches, volleyball, netball, handball, rugby, hockey fields, basketball courts, athletics tracks, tennis courts, and swimming pools.
Managed by the Directorate of Sports and Games, these facilities support intra-mural and extra-mural competitions at various levels, from inter-campus to national and continental championships. The university consistently excels in sports, maintaining a leadership position in national competitions and achieving notable successes at regional levels since its participation in the Kenya National University Games from 1989.
