Maseno University has a rich history that dates back to the merging of Maseno Government Training Institute (GTI) and Siriba Teacher’s Training College to form Maseno University College, a Constituent College of Moi University, in 1990. It achieved full university status in 2001. The university’s name, “Maseno,” originated from a local tree known as “Oseno” or “Oluseno,” near the base of the first missionaries in the region.
Today, Maseno University offers a modern learning experience designed to meet the socio-economic, technological, and innovation needs of Kenya and Eastern Africa. The university also operates enterprises such as Kisumu Hotel and the university farm, which supports its operations and local markets.
Maseno University offers a wide range of academic programs designed to meet the needs of industry and prepare students for the knowledge economy. With a current enrolment of approximately 21,000 students, the university provides an array of programs, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, Diploma, Certificate, and Doctorate degrees.
The academic structure emphasizes “With IT” programs, ensuring that graduates are proficient in information and communication technology, enabling them to thrive in multidisciplinary environments. The eCampus represents a significant innovation, allowing for online delivery of quality programs to learners across Kenya and the East African region, thereby promoting lifelong learning opportunities and reducing barriers to education based on physical location.
Maseno University also offers a vibrant extra-curricular environment that promotes holistic development. The university encourages participation in various activities, including sports, cultural events, and academic clubs.
