






Katigondo National Major Seminary, founded in 1911 by the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), holds a historic and unique position in the life of the Catholic Church in Africa as the first seminary established south of the Sahara in modern times.
The seminary’s greatest early achievement was the priestly ordination of the first two Ugandan priests in 1913. Since its establishment, over 4,000 seminarians have studied at Katigondo, with 1,700 ordained as priests and 27 elevated to the rank of bishop. The seminary continues to serve as a center for holistic priestly formation, combining academic excellence with spiritual, pastoral, and ethical development.
Katigondo Seminary offers a structured three-year philosophy and theology curriculum designed to prepare seminarians for effective service in the Catholic Church. In the first year, students study foundational subjects including Introduction to the Old Testament, Bible Studies, General Ethics, African Philosophy, Catechesis, Liturgy, Introduction to Philosophy, and Greek, among others.
The second year builds on this foundation with courses in Human Resource Management, Metaphysics, Epistemology, Aristotle’s Metaphysics, Basics of Theology I, Philosophy of Science, and Project Planning and Management. In the third year, seminarians engage with advanced studies such as Philosophy of Language, Special Ethics, Philosophy of Religion, Kant’s Critique of Practical Reason, Aquinas’ De Ente et Essentia, and Philosophical Anthropology. The program integrates research, spirituality, and liturgical practice throughout the academic years to foster intellectual rigor and pastoral readiness.
Students at Katigondo Seminary participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities that complement their academic and spiritual formation. The seminary community is divided into small, self-governing units called teams, each guided by a chaplain.
These teams engage in regular prayer, reflection, and Eucharistic celebrations, creating a sense of spiritual accountability and communal living. Leadership skills are nurtured through the elected student council, while teamwork, discipline, and pastoral responsibility are reinforced through group-based projects, liturgical participation, and service activities within the seminary community.
Katigondo Seminary is equipped with academic lecture halls, specialized classrooms for philosophy and theology studies, libraries, chapels, and residential accommodations for students.
The seminary fosters a supportive learning environment where seminarians live in community, pray together, and participate in structured spiritual and pastoral programs. Teams and chaplains ensure ongoing mentorship and guidance, while the infrastructure supports both rigorous academic study and holistic personal development.
Today, Katigondo National Major Seminary remains a leading institution for priestly formation in Uganda, committed to shaping holy, committed, and pastoral-oriented Catholic priests.
The seminary is overseen by a Rector and Vice-Rector, supported by a formation team drawn from various dioceses across Uganda, qualified lecturers, spiritual directors, and a dedicated lay and religious staff. Students are carefully selected through recommendations from bishops and vocation directors, ensuring a committed and diverse community. The seminary maintains a balance of intellectual, spiritual, and pastoral formation, preparing its graduates to serve the Church and society effectively both locally and internationally.
