Uganda Youth Soccer Academy (UYSA) was founded in October 2007 by a group of visionary young Ugandans with a holistic mission to empower youth, girls, and women living in the urban slums of Kampala through soccer.
The academy operates primarily in slum areas of Kampala, combining sports development with social empowerment to create lasting change. UYSA focuses on providing opportunities for marginalized communities, particularly orphaned girls, widowed women, and single mothers, helping them gain skills, confidence, and independence.
While UYSA’s core focus is sports, the academy integrates entrepreneurial and vocational training programs into its curriculum to ensure participants gain practical life skills. Girls and women enrolled in UYSA programs are taught skills such as commercial cookery and bakery, including cookies, pancakes, donuts, buns, and bread.
Participants also receive training in horticulture, covering the cultivation of vegetables and fruits like tomatoes, cabbages, eggplants, and passion fruits. In addition, the academy teaches livestock management, including rearing rabbits, pigs, and chickens, and the creation of marketable handicrafts such as baskets, mats, trays, and door mats.
Soccer is at the heart of UYSA’s co-curricular programs, providing young people with structured physical activity, teamwork experience, and leadership development. The academy also organizes tournaments, coaching clinics, and mentorship sessions to foster discipline, self-confidence, and resilience. Through these activities, participants learn valuable life lessons, develop interpersonal skills, and gain exposure to broader opportunities beyond their communities.
UYSA operates primarily at community fields and local recreation areas within Kampala’s slums, where participants can engage in soccer training, practical workshops, and skill-building sessions. The academy’s facilities support soccer practices, tournaments, and hands-on vocational training, providing a safe and supportive environment for learning, recreation, and empowerment.
Uganda Youth Soccer Academy is a socially driven organization committed to breaking cycles of poverty among girls and women in Kampala’s urban slums. UYSA recognizes that education and vocational skills are crucial for empowerment and sustainable development.
The academy’s mission is to create conditions that support and value women and girls, helping them gain income-generating skills, pursue education, and become self-reliant citizens. With a focus on holistic empowerment, UYSA combines sports, entrepreneurship, and personal development to transform lives.
