Kampala School For The Physically Handicapped Academics

The school follows the Ugandan national curriculum, while also providing a specialized curriculum designed for children with mental challenges. Academic classes range from Reception to Primary Seven (P1–P7), with pupils grouped according to their learning needs.

Lessons are delivered using multiple approaches and adaptive teaching tools, such as thick padded pencils, specialized desks, and wheelchair-friendly equipment, all developed in consultation with therapists. At the end of P7, arrangements are made with the Uganda National Examinations Board to provide individual examination transcribers for students with specific challenges, ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed academically.

Kampala School for the Physically Handicapped emphasizes holistic development through extra-curricular programs. Students participate in music, dance, drama, fine arts, adapted sports (wheelchair racing, wheelchair basketball, boccia), and computer training. The school has represented Uganda in events such as the Kids Special Olympics League, the International Chess Championship for People with Disabilities, and inclusive dance festivals like UNSEEN DREAMS. These activities encourage teamwork, creativity, and confidence while celebrating the unique talents of each child.

Rehabilitation

A core department at the school, Rehabilitation encompasses Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and General Nursing/Sick Bay. The multidisciplinary team, which includes therapists, nurses, and visiting doctors, designs individualized therapy plans to medically rehabilitate and care for each child. The department ensures that students are supported in their physical development, enabling them to participate fully in school life and daily activities.

Vocational Training

The Vocational Department trains students who have completed primary education but are unable to continue to secondary school due to financial or learning barriers. Courses offered include tailoring, tie-dye, bead making, ceramics, cookery, agriculture, leatherwork, and knitting, equipping students with practical skills for self-reliance. Many of the department’s products have reached international markets, and the school aims to build a business arm to sustain operations, generate income, and provide employment opportunities for alumni, including those with mental challenges.
