Curriculum:

Kakunyu School is an inclusive educational institution in Uganda that provides specialized education for children with intellectual disabilities and other learning difficulties. The school is committed to improving the cognitive, social, and emotional development of children with special needs while fostering an environment of care, respect, and learning. Owned by the Kakunyu Parents Association and supported internationally by the Friends of Kakunyu School in the UK, the school is recognized for its inclusive approach and commitment to holistic child development.

Kakunyu School was established in 2005 in a modest two-room house by the founder of the Kakunyu Association. Initially, the school served only six children, most of whom had multiple disabilities and some who were orphaned. In response to growing demand, the Parents’ Association led several development initiatives, including fundraising and acquiring land. By October 2008, two acres of land were purchased, and later that year, funding from Ms. Janet Lowe through the UK-based NGO Send a Cow enabled the construction of a specialized school for nursery children and children with special educational needs. Today, Kakunyu School stands as one of Uganda’s few inclusive schools, providing a model for quality education for children with disabilities.

The Kakunyu Parents’ Support Group plays a crucial role in the school’s growth and community impact. The group implements programs such as identification and referral of children with disabilities, organizing sensitization and development meetings, promoting modern household agriculture, raising awareness on disability, HIV/AIDS, and other health issues, promoting the rights of children with disabilities, and organizing exchange visits for knowledge sharing. This active parental involvement ensures that the school remains responsive to the needs of both students and the wider community.
