Established to expand access to higher education, DODL has grown significantly in both student numbers and program offerings. It provides a flexible learning platform for students who may be unable to attend full-time, on-campus programs, enabling lifelong learning and skill development through innovative Open & Distance Learning methods.
DODL manages all external degree programs at Makerere University, offering courses through a flexible learning approach that combines print and audio study materials, face-to-face sessions, organized study groups at designated centers, and self-directed learning. The Department offers four main programs in collaboration with Makerere University’s Colleges and Schools: the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) with the College of Business and Management Sciences,
While focusing primarily on academic flexibility, DODL encourages students to participate in self-directed study groups and occasional face-to-face sessions that foster collaboration, critical thinking, and peer learning. The department supports lifelong learning principles by facilitating student engagement, discussions, and networking opportunities with fellow learners across the university’s study centers.
DODL provides a range of support resources, including well-produced study materials, online and print learning tools, and access to regional study centers for face-to-face interactions. The department maintains a robust student support system and tutoring services, ensuring learners receive guidance throughout their program. Collaborative arrangements with various colleges and departments also allow students to access specialized faculty expertise, library resources, and other academic facilities at Makerere University.
The vision of DODL is to provide a wide variety of relevant educational programs for adult learners using a flexible approach that enhances access to higher education. Its mission is to serve students who may otherwise be unable to attend full-time programs while maintaining the quality and standards of Makerere University. DODL operates in close collaboration with multiple colleges and departments, ensuring that external degree students receive the same level of instruction, assessment, and academic guidance as on-campus students.
