Kabale University is a public institution of higher learning located on Kikungiri Hill in Kabale Municipality, southwestern Uganda, just two kilometers off the Kabale–Kigali Highway. The university was originally established as a community initiative under the Kigezi Development Association and officially opened its gates in 2002 with only 42 students. Today, it has grown to an enrolment of over 4,360 students drawn from Uganda and neighboring countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan. Kabale University became a public university in July 2015 under Statutory Instrument No. 36, making it the first institution in Uganda to transition from private to public status. With its strategic location in the Great Lakes Region, the university continues to attract both Anglophone and Francophone learners, contributing to regional academic and cultural integration.

Kabale University History

The idea of Kabale University was conceived in 1995 under the umbrella of the Kigezi Development Association. In 1999, Kabale District Local Government donated 53 acres of land at Kikungiri Hill and Nyabikoni, laying the foundation for the establishment of the university. Starting in 2002 as a not-for-profit community university, Kabale University steadily grew in scope and capacity. In 2014, it obtained a Charter (Certificate No. UI.CH.008), the highest level of accreditation by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. The following year, it was elevated to public university status. Kabale University’s vision is to become a leading institution in the Great Lakes Region, providing quality education that contributes to social and economic transformation.
