While Mukono ZARDI primarily functions as a research and development institute rather than a traditional academic institution, it plays a critical role in agricultural education and knowledge transfer. The institute engages in applied and adaptive research in key agricultural sectors, including crop improvement, livestock management, fisheries, forestry, agro-machinery, natural resource management, and socio-economic studies. Findings from the research are disseminated to farmers, extension workers, and policymakers to improve farming practices and increase productivity across the Lake Victoria Crescent Agro-ecological Zone.
NARO and Mukono ZARDI also collaborate with universities, technical colleges, and international research institutions to provide practical training, internships, and capacity-building programs. These programs help nurture the next generation of agricultural scientists, researchers, and extension workers in Uganda.

Mukono Zonal Agricultural Research And Development Institute Facilities
Mukono ZARDI is equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities to support its mandate in agricultural innovation. The institute houses experimental farms, laboratories, greenhouses, and demonstration plots for crops, livestock, and fisheries research.
The facilities enable practical training, field experimentation, and technology demonstration, ensuring that research outcomes are immediately applicable to the farming communities in the region. Additionally, the institute maintains office infrastructure for administrative, planning, and extension services, facilitating efficient coordination of research projects across its 21-district operational zone.
Mukono Zonal Agricultural Research And Development Institute History
Mukono Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mukono ZARDI) is one of the nine zonal institutes established under NARO through the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) Act of 2005. Mukono ZARDI is dedicated to applied and adaptive agricultural research in the Lake Victoria Crescent Agro-ecological Zone, covering 21 districts in Central Uganda, including Mukono, Kampala, Wakiso, Masaka, Kalangala, and others. The institute has transitioned from a District Farm Institute (DFI) to a semi-autonomous Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Centre (ARDC), reflecting its growing capacity and expanded mandate.
Mukono ZARDI operates with a clear vision of enhancing the livelihoods of farming communities in its region through research-driven innovations. Its mission focuses on developing, adapting, and effectively disseminating appropriate agricultural technologies that promote productivity, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
