Nsamizi Training Institute of Social Development | NTISD Academics

NTISD offers a wide range of academic programmes at certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Diploma programmes include Social Work, Development Studies, Entrepreneurship Development, Counselling and Guidance, Public Administration and Management, Children and Youth Development, Literacy and Adult Education, Leadership and Good Governance, Gender and Development, Juvenile Justice, Business Administration, Secretarial Studies, Human Resource Management, Journalism and Media Studies, Community Health Management, and Agribusiness Management.

At the undergraduate level, students can pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Development or a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration and Management. Graduate programs include a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Justice and a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Development.

The institute also runs certificate courses in Social Mobilization, Counseling and Guidance, Public Administration, Literacy and Adult Education, Child Protection, Community-Based Work with Children and Youth, Solar Technology, Nursery Teaching, and Community-Based Development. These programs are designed to equip learners with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that directly address social development needs.

In addition to academic programmes, NTISD emphasizes experiential learning and personal development through co-curricular activities. The institute organizes indoor and outdoor sports, campfire-based reflection sessions, and community-based projects to encourage teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking.

Field attachments and change project engagements are compulsory, ensuring that students apply classroom knowledge to real-life community challenges. These activities not only enhance academic outcomes but also nurture social responsibility and innovation among learners.

Nsamizi Training Institute of Social Development | NTISD Facilities

NTISD offers a conducive learning environment within the serene green hills of Mpigi. The institute is equipped with a conference hall, lecture rooms, a library, and a computer laboratory to support learning and research. Accommodation facilities include hostels that can house up to 40 participants in self-contained rooms, with catering services available.

To maintain quality standards, the institute organizes training in manageable cohorts and emphasizes hands-on capacity building. Recreational and social activities are encouraged through sports and reflection sessions, while the natural setting of Mpigi enhances concentration, creativity, and well-being.

Nsamizi Training Institute of Social Development | NTISD History

NTISD is one of the oldest in-service training institutes in Uganda, dating back to its early roots as the Local Government and Community Development Centre established by the colonial government in the 1950s. It was among the first government institutions set up to train cadres to replace colonial administrators, alongside Bukalasa Agricultural College, Arapai, Survey Training Institute Entebbe, and Kyambogo College.

Over time, NTISD has evolved into a center of excellence in social development training, producing graduates who serve in government ministries, local governments, NGOs, private sector organizations, and grassroots community structures. Its vision is to become a reputable center of excellence in training and producing practical-oriented human resources, while its mission is to prepare competent professionals with positive attitudes who can transform the social development sector in Uganda and the Great Lakes region.
