The National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) is a semi-autonomous public agricultural research institute in Uganda, operating under the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) and established by the National Agricultural Research Act of 2005. NaFIRRI is committed to advancing fisheries knowledge, technology, and sustainable practices through research, training, and stakeholder engagement. Its vision is to be a centre of excellence in fisheries innovations, working in collaboration with strategic partnerships to support sustainable fish production and conservation of aquatic resources.
NaFIRRI provides specialized training and research in fisheries and aquaculture sciences. Key academic areas include fish biology and ecology, fish genetics, fisheries stock assessment, aquaculture research, broodstock improvement, fry production, live and pelleted feed production, pond dynamics and management, and fish quality and safety. The institute also offers training in fisheries socio-economics, aquatic plant and weed management, and the study of fish parasites and diseases. These programs equip researchers, students, and practitioners with the knowledge and skills to advance sustainable fisheries management and contribute to Uganda’s food security and economic development.
In addition to formal training, NaFIRRI encourages participation in practical research projects, field studies, and workshops that expose trainees to real-world fisheries challenges. Activities such as fish habitat assessments, aquaculture pond management, laboratory experiments, and socio-economic studies foster hands-on learning, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Students and researchers also engage in collaborative projects with local communities, government agencies, and international partners, enhancing their professional networks and practical experience in fisheries and environmental conservation.
NaFIRRI is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, aquaculture ponds, hatcheries, research boats, and marine engineering workshops to support its training and research activities. Its facilities include fish breeding and rearing units, feed production labs, water quality monitoring systems, and disease diagnostic centers. The institute also maintains field stations for stock assessment and habitat studies, as well as offices and classrooms for training and workshops. These facilities ensure that students, researchers, and stakeholders have access to practical, hands-on resources to advance their understanding and management of Uganda’s fisheries resources.
NaFIRRI was originally established in 1947 as the East African Fisheries Research Organization (EAFRO) by the British colonial government and has undergone several transformations to become Uganda’s leading fisheries research institute. Its mission is to generate and disseminate fisheries knowledge, technologies, and information to support sustainable fish production, conserve genetic resources, maintain water quality, and enhance livelihoods. NaFIRRI conducts both basic and applied research, addressing national and strategic priorities in capture fisheries, aquaculture, socio-economics, marketing, and emerging issues in the sector.
