Gulu College of Health Sciences is a leading government institution in Northern Uganda, established in the 1950s to provide quality health education and promote research-driven clinical practice. The college plays a vital role in strengthening Uganda’s health system by training competent, compassionate, and community-oriented health professionals.

Through its long-standing commitment to excellence, the college continues to deliver equitable and safe healthcare education while engaging communities, health workers, and students in addressing public health challenges, particularly in socially disadvantaged and indigenous populations.

Gulu School of Clinical Officers Academics

Over the decades, Gulu College of Health Sciences has evolved from a midwifery school to a comprehensive allied health institution offering a wide range of diploma and certificate programs. The college’s academic journey began with training midwives and nurses, later expanding to medical assistants and clinical officers. Since 2016, it has diversified to include Diplomas in Public Health Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Services Management, and Anesthesia.

Other programs include Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Community Health, Diploma in Environmental Health Sciences, Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, and corresponding certificate programs in the same disciplines. The college operates on a semester system and is examined by the Uganda Allied Health Examinations Board (UAHEB), ensuring national credibility and alignment with health sector standards.

Beyond academics, Gulu College of Health Sciences promotes holistic development through various co-curricular activities coordinated by the Dean of Students. These activities include counseling and mentorship, student leadership development, and participation in sports and cultural events.

The Dean’s office also oversees conflict resolution, student welfare, and the formation of associations that nurture teamwork and community engagement. Through sports and extracurricular programs, students develop interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and a culture of respect and responsibility that aligns with the college’s professional values.

The college is well-equipped with facilities that enhance both academic and practical learning experiences. It houses modern classrooms, laboratories for practical sessions, and a well-stocked library offering wireless internet, study materials, and research resources. The institution also provides computing services through its fully equipped computer laboratory located opposite Gulu High Court, offering computer literacy training for students and external learners at affordable fees. Sports facilities such as football and volleyball fields, and indoor games like table tennis, are also available to encourage physical fitness and teamwork. Additionally, students have access to online application services, making the admission process more efficient and accessible.

Gulu School of Clinical Officers History

Today, Gulu College of Health Sciences stands as a model for competence-based education in Uganda’s health sector. With a current enrollment of over 400 students, the college projects a steady increase to 1,500 students within the coming years, reflecting its growing reputation. The institution’s operations are guided by the national BTVET Strategic Plan (2012/3 – 2022/3), the Education and Sports Strategic Plan (ESSP II), and the National Development Plan (NDP II), ensuring alignment with Uganda’s development goals.

The college’s five-year strategic plan focuses on resource optimization, infrastructure growth, and academic innovation. Under the leadership of a dedicated team and with the support of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Gulu College of Health Sciences continues to uphold its mission of producing professional health officers with the knowledge, skills, and ethical standards needed to serve Uganda and beyond.
