About

Curriculum: Uganda National Examinations Board Curriculum (UNEB)

The Mengo Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery is the first and oldest institution of its kind in Uganda and East Africa, tracing its roots back to 1919. Founded by Mrs. Catherine Cook, wife of Dr. Albert Ruskin Cook, the pioneer of modern medical care in Uganda, the school began with a small group of eight midwives before expanding to include nursing training in 1928.

For over a century, the school has remained a cornerstone of nursing and midwifery education, producing generations of professionals who have served in hospitals and health centers across the region. Guided by Christian values and a mission to deliver holistic health care training, the school continues to uphold its legacy of excellence and compassion in healthcare education.

Mengo School Of Nursing And Midwifrey Academics

Mengo Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery offers specialized programs designed to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and ethics needed to excel in the healthcare profession. The school provides two major academic pathways: the Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery (Upgrading) and the Certificate in Nursing or Midwifery.

The Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery (Upgrading) runs for one and a half years and is open to candidates holding a Certificate in Nursing or Midwifery. The Certificate in Nursing or Midwifery is a two-and-a-half-year program designed for “O” Level (UCE) graduates with passes in sciences, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, and Mathematics. Both programs have intakes in January and July, providing flexibility for aspiring students.

The school employs modern and diverse teaching methods such as enquiry-based learning, lectures, demonstrations, seminars, and tutorials. Students are exposed to both classroom instruction and practical placements in hospital and community settings, enabling them to gain real-world experience alongside qualified practitioners. This integration of academic and clinical learning ensures graduates are competent, compassionate, and ready to serve.

Mengo School Of Nursing And Midwifrey Co-curricular

Beyond academics, Mengo Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery emphasizes the development of well-rounded professionals through co-curricular engagement. Mengo School Of Nursing And Midwifrey History

The Mengo Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery forms an integral part of the historic legacy of Mengo Hospital, Uganda’s first medical institution, established in 1897 by Dr. Albert Ruskin Cook. The hospital and school were both founded as part of the Church Missionary Society’s response to Kabaka Muteesa I’s invitation to improve healthcare, education, and spiritual welfare in the Buganda Kingdom.

Officially established in September 1990 under the Nursing Institutions Act of 1986, the school is fully registered with the Ministry of Education and Sports and operates as a mixed institution for both male and female students. The school’s vision is to be a center of excellence in producing comprehensively trained nursing professionals, while its mission is to produce highly competent and responsible nurses guided by Christian values to deliver holistic healthcare services.

Mengo School’s academic philosophy revolves around the connection between learning and practice, helping students apply theoretical knowledge to real-life healthcare situations. The institution is proud of its heritage as a Christian medical witness, continuing the vision of Dr. and Mrs. Cook to heal both body and spirit through compassionate and competent care.
