Lira University Academics

Lira University has four faculties: Health Sciences, Management Science, Computer and Information Science, and Engineering and Technology. These faculties offer a diverse range of programs tailored to national and global development needs. Notably, Lira University is the first public university in Uganda to introduce Bachelor’s programs in Midwifery and Public Health, addressing critical gaps in maternal and neonatal health.

Other programs span across Medicine and Surgery, Community Psychology, Economics, Commerce, Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Science, ICT, Education, Public Administration, and Library Science. Postgraduate training includes Master’s programs in Business Administration, Public Health, Midwifery Science, Mental Health Counseling, and Public Administration. By integrating applied sciences, professional training, and research, the university equips graduates with knowledge and skills to drive sustainable socio-economic transformation.

Lira University Co-curricular

Lira University emphasizes holistic education, nurturing students beyond academics through co-curricular and extracurricular activities. The institution supports a vibrant Students’ Guild that empowers learners with leadership, advocacy, and governance experience.

Sports and recreational activities are encouraged, promoting teamwork, physical well-being, and talent development. Co-curricular engagements also include cultural events, debates, innovation competitions, and community outreach programs, which strengthen students’ social responsibility and prepare them to contribute meaningfully to society.

Lira University Facilities

Lira University offers state-of-the-art facilities to support learning, research, and innovation. The institution hosts Uganda’s first University Teaching Hospital, providing hands-on clinical training for health science students and quality healthcare services to the community.

The university library, which began in 2010 as an affiliate of Gulu University Library, has evolved into a modern academic resource center equipped with print and digital materials to support research and learning. Additional facilities include lecture halls, laboratories, ICT centers, administrative offices, student hostels, and sports grounds. With ongoing investments in infrastructure and technology, Lira University provides an enabling environment where students can thrive academically and socially.

Lira University History

As a public university established under the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, Lira University derives its mandate to provide higher education, conduct professional training, promote research, and disseminate knowledge for national development.

The university’s vision is to be “A Beacon Centre of Applied Science and Technology” and its mission is “to provide access to quality higher education, research, and professional training for the delivery of appropriate health services directed towards sustainable community and environmental development.”

Guided by its core values—management excellence, professionalism, integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, teamwork, and internationalization—the university continues to expand academic programs and infrastructure to meet Uganda’s critical development priorities.
