University Of Saint Joseph Mbarara | USJ History

The University of Saint Joseph Mbarara (USJM) is located on Nyamitanga Hill near Nyamitanga Cathedral and is owned and managed by the Archdiocese of Mbarara. Founded in line with the Church’s mission to promote holistic education, USJM integrates faith, learning, and community service. The university operates under a vision of being a leading center for integrated and community-responsive university education and a mission to provide holistic education for sustainable development.

USJM’s core values—God-fearing, integrity, excellence, accountability, and community responsiveness—guide every aspect of its operations. The institution emphasizes research, innovation, and demand-oriented skills development, ensuring that its graduates are well-equipped to address real-world challenges. In December 2016, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) granted USJM a Letter of Interim Authority, followed by a Provisional License in November 2017, accrediting its initial 11 programs.

The university’s objectives are deeply rooted in human and Christian values.
