St. Mbaaga’s Major Seminary, located in Ggaba under the Archdiocese of Kampala, is a diocesan seminary committed to forming priests after the heart of Jesus Christ. The seminary exists to participate in the mission of God, inspired by the biblical promise: “I will give you shepherds after my own heart” (Jeremiah 3:15).
Guided by the Archbishop of Kampala, the seminary emphasizes holistic priestly formation grounded in spiritual, pastoral, and intellectual growth. With decades of impact, it remains the only diocesan major seminary in the AMECEA region, continuing to shape shepherds who are lights to the world.
The academic program at St. Mbaaga’s Major Seminary is designed to provide solid training for candidates to the priesthood, preparing them to be true shepherds of souls after the example of Christ. The curriculum covers philosophy, theology, pastoral studies, and academic writing to equip seminarians with the intellectual and spiritual depth needed for priestly ministry.
With highly qualified academic staff, the seminary offers resources such as course syllabi, structured academic programs, and specialized support for international students. The Dean of Studies ensures that academic standards meet both ecclesiastical and global expectations. The library, with over 41,000 volumes covering philosophy, theology, psychology, sociology, and other relevant disciplines, enriches research and study. In addition, the collection is digitized using the KOHA system, enabling efficient access to academic resources.
Formation at St. Mbaaga’s goes beyond classroom instruction to embrace a holistic model of priestly preparation. Seminarians are engaged in liturgical life, community service, pastoral fieldwork, and spiritual exercises that ground their vocation in practical ministry.
These activities foster leadership, discipline, and a deeper connection with the mission of the Church. Co-curricular engagements such as pastoral placements, community outreach, and evangelization efforts ensure that graduates are not only academically competent but also pastorally prepared to serve in parishes and beyond.
St. Mbaaga’s Seminary offers facilities that support holistic formation and learning. The library, a cornerstone of academic life, holds over 41,000 volumes, including e-books, periodicals, research papers, and general reference works. Classified under the Dewey Decimal Classification system and fully digitized with KOHA software, the library ensures efficient access to resources.
The seminary also provides accommodation, worship spaces, and academic facilities to support both spiritual and intellectual development. These resources create an environment conducive to prayer, study, and community living, enabling seminarians to grow into well-rounded priests prepared for pastoral service.
Today, St. Mbaaga’s Seminary stands as a vibrant institution producing priests who continue to transform the Church in Uganda and the wider region. Since its official reopening in 1976 under the patronage of St. Mbaaga, one of the Uganda Martyrs, the seminary has ordained more than 150 priests and contributed significantly to the pastoral needs of the Archdiocese of Kampala and beyond.
The seminary remains committed to forming candidates through rigorous spiritual guidance, intellectual training, and pastoral experience. Its vision is to shape priests who are lights to their communities, while its mission focuses on producing shepherds after the heart of Jesus.
