The National Crops Resources Research Institute (NACRRI) is a leading public agricultural research institution in Uganda, operating under the policy guidance of the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO). Located at its headquarters in Namulonge, NACRRI plays a pivotal role in advancing crop and livestock production through innovative research, farmer engagement, and technology development. Its work contributes directly to national food security and the growth of Uganda’s agricultural sector.
NACRRI’s research activities are organized under specialized commodity programs and units, reflecting its mandate to enhance Uganda’s crop and livestock productivity. The primary programs focus on beans, cassava, cereals, potatoes, bananas, and horticultural crops, while coffee and tree crop research is conducted at the Kituza Research Centre in Mukono District.
Each program benefits from multidisciplinary teams that work on genetic improvement, pest and disease management, and sustainable crop production practices. These programs also extend to livestock feed resource management and the development of technologies to optimize agricultural outputs.
NACRRI places strong emphasis on participatory research and community engagement. Farmers and other stakeholders are actively involved in trials, demonstrations, and the evaluation of new crop varieties and agricultural technologies. This approach not only strengthens research relevance but also builds the capacity of local communities to implement best practices in crop and livestock production. Through training workshops, field days, and collaborative projects, NACRRI fosters knowledge transfer and enhances the practical application of research findings at the grassroots level.
NACRRI operates with state-of-the-art research infrastructure at its Namulonge headquarters and satellite centers such as the Kituza Research Centre. The institute maintains experimental fields, laboratories, and storage facilities for genetic materials, enabling comprehensive research across multiple crops. These facilities support advanced breeding programs, pest and disease diagnostics, and agronomic studies, ensuring that NACRRI remains at the forefront of agricultural research and innovation in Uganda.
NACRRI is dedicated to improving the productivity, sustainability, and resilience of Uganda’s agricultural systems. The institute operates under a multidisciplinary framework, engaging scientists, technicians, and extension workers to address the diverse challenges facing crop and livestock production.
By emphasizing participatory research, NACRRI ensures that farmers and other stakeholders are involved at every stage of technology development and adaptation. This approach strengthens the relevance of research outcomes and promotes adoption of innovations across the country.
