About

Curriculum: Uganda National Examinations Board Curriculum (UNEB)

Welcome to Arlington Junior School (AJS), a model institution established by the Arlington Academy of Hope (AAH), now partnering with REACH for Uganda. Our school is the cornerstone of a mission dedicated to transforming communities in rural eastern Uganda through education, healthcare, and sustainable development. Founded on the principle that true change comes through collaboration, we are not just another NGO; we work hand-in-hand with local leaders and community members to safeguard every investment and ensure sustainable transformation. Our aim is simple: to provide a high-quality, rigorous education that prepares children to strengthen their communities and the world.

Arlington Academy of Hope Primary School Academics

Arlington Junior School delivers a rigorous, traditional curriculum taught in English, with a strong emphasis on science, social studies, reading, and mathematics to build critical thinking, participation, debate, and self-expression. From Nursery to Primary 7, students receive breakfast and lunch daily, along with uniforms and supplies, contributing to near-100% attendance rates—far surpassing the 70% typical in public schools. Many students benefit from sponsorships by international donors, who provide not only financial support but also personal encouragement through letters and photos.

The school’s modern library, stocked with over 10,000 books and accessible to the wider community, supports enhanced learning. These high standards have yielded extraordinary results: for 19 years running, every AJS student has passed the PLE with flying colors, paving the way for secondary education and beyond. REACH’s educational model sets benchmarks for academic excellence, preparing children for careers that strengthen their communities and the world.

Arlington Academy of Hope Primary School Co-curricular

REACH Uganda enriches student life at Arlington Junior School through dynamic co-curricular programs that promote holistic growth. Beyond academics, students engage in health and vocational initiatives, including community clinics, modern healthcare access, and training in sustainable farming, building techniques, and environmental stewardship. Each year, over 30 U.S. volunteers—including teachers, nurses, and students—visit to lead workshops, medical outreaches, and cultural exchanges, fostering international understanding. These activities encourage technology use, practical skills, and shared learning experiences that bridge local and global perspectives. By integrating sports, arts, and community service, REACH cultivates well-rounded individuals who contribute to self-sustaining villages while embracing cultural diversity and moral values.

Arlington Academy of Hope Primary School Facilities

Arlington Junior School is committed to continuous improvement for the benefit of the wider community. The school features a modern library that houses more than 10,000 books. This resource is not exclusive to our students; it is also utilized by teachers and students from other local schools. Our broader vision, supported by REACH, extends to community development, seeking to establish clinics and health programs, and encouraging outreach villages to employ sustainable technology, building, and farming techniques that increase environmental awareness and stewardship. We also foster greater cultural understanding on local, national, and international levels through shared learning experiences and technology.

Arlington Academy of Hope Primary School History

REACH Uganda traces its roots to 1999, when John and Joyce Wanda, inspired by John’s upbringing in Bumwalukani village, Bududa District, launched a scholarship program supporting 144 local children with fees, supplies, and uniforms. Facing persistent challenges in public schools—like teacher absences and lack of resources—they consulted communities and supporters to establish the Arlington Academy of Hope (AAH) in 2004.

Arlington Junior School opened on February 2, 2004, welcoming 78 students; today, it serves 450 and continues to expand. John, a CPA and MBA holder with a distinguished career in the U.S., served as AAH’s first President and now chairs the Uganda board, providing strategic oversight. Joyce, co-founder, emphasizes grassroots partnerships with respected local leaders. Their efforts have earned accolades, including Humanitarian of the Year and Uganda’s Outstanding Service Award.

The most important day of a person’s education is the first day of school, not Graduation Day.
