Never Give Up. “BANNO” History
In 1904, a Muganda Chief described the lack of a girls’ boarding school as the “Muganda’s broken arm.” The ladies’ conference of the CMS recommended that a school should be opened at Gayaza, where there was already a mission station on the land donated by Sir Apollo Kagwa.
Gayaza Junior School is now an International school and one that lives up to the challenges of delivering an education relevant to the demands of the day.
Enrolment: Gayaza Junior School has an enrolment of about 1000 girls in 18 streams from primary one (P.1) to primary seven (P.7) managed by the School Management Committee, School Development and Planning Committee, Headmistress, two deputies, thirty (30) teachers and eighty (80) support staff.
The Nabagereka Sylvia Nagginda complex has been constructed, with a well equipped and spacious library and computer laboratory. The expansion of the dining hall has been completed to accommodate the increasing number of pupils.
A new Centenary complex (Kibuuka Margaret Najjemba) has been completed with over 12 more classrooms, a magnificent staff room with conference facilities and a well equipped language laboratory with audio visual materials such as television sets and radios have been set up.
Gayaza Junior School has craft lessons, where children learn to make baskets, mats, tablecloths, doormats, bags, necklaces, wall mats, sweaters, tie and dye pieces, etc.
They also have a lot of sports activities which include; netball, volleyball, athletics, games of low organization for the infants, and all other field events. Sports competition usually occurs among the four houses. The winning colour/country is always given a live bull at the end of the competition which is then slaughtered for the pupils to enjoy as they celebrate their victory party.
