Kennedy Secondary School, just outside Entebbe, is a beneficiary of the Ngamba Island outreach programme. Silver, head of education at Ngamba, used to teach at Kennedy and he came back today to show some of the children a documentary provided by the Great Ape Film Initiative and talk to them about conservation. Some of the students had previously been to Ngamba Island itself as part of the programme.

The school has 1,026 students, most of them boarders. It is a sprawling campus. The pathways between the buildings are paved with sandy coloured stones, the drains running alongside them giving the impression of an ancient city. There is a miscellany of different buildings – whitewashed concrete, plaster with spidery tea-stain cracks and bare red brick with wooden beams and corrugated roofs. The windows have no glass, instead there are elegant iron or woodwork lattices creating an unexpected sense of faded grandeur. Dotted around the campus are large piles of brick dust, masonry and the odd chicken.
