As Charles Hurlburt faced the dilemma of either relinquishing his children to education in England or abandoning his missionary calling, he devised a surprising solution: he’d keep both. He asked new missionary Josephine Hope to teach his children right here in Kenya. They soon drew up plans for dormitory and classroom space, and in 1909 President Teddy Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the main building, Kiambogo.
As a branch of Africa Inland Mission, RVA plays a dual role—supporting active missionary work while nurturing the next generation of leaders and gospel-bearers. The school welcomes students from various churches and sending organizations, along with Kenyan nationals and expatriate students. With a strong emphasis on Christian values, RVA instills a commitment to service and spiritual growth.
RVA offers a North American-based curriculum that integrates faith and learning. The elementary program, Titchie Swot, educates students from kindergarten to sixth grade, providing a strong foundation in Bible study, art, physical education, and music.
Junior high and high school students follow a rigorous academic path, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The curriculum includes core subjects alongside specialized instruction in visual arts, performing arts, and leadership development.
Students actively engage in visual and performing arts, sports, and cultural enrichment programs. Music education begins in sixth grade, with opportunities to join concert bands, jazz ensembles, and choir groups that tour across Kenya. The theatre department fosters creativity through acting, stage production, and technical design. Weekly chapel services, service projects, and leadership programs further cultivate personal and spiritual growth.
RVA provides modern learning spaces, a well-equipped library, and music and art studios. Athletic facilities support a range of sports, while drama and performance spaces allow students to showcase their talents. The school ensures a nurturing environment where students grow academically, spiritually, and personally.
