The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) is the national professional accountancy body in Uganda, established to develop and regulate the accountancy profession. ICPAU serves as the standard-setting and regulatory authority for accountants in the country, ensuring that professionals operate ethically, competently, and in alignment with international benchmarks.

The Institute plays a critical role in Uganda’s financial sector by producing highly skilled accountants, tax advisors, and accounting technicians who contribute to sustainable economic growth. ICPAU is a key member of international accountancy organizations, including the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), and collaborates with East African Community (EAC) partner institutes through Mutual Recognition Agreements to facilitate professional mobility across the region.

ICPAU offers three primary qualifications designed to meet both national and international accountancy standards: the Certified Public Accountant of Uganda (CPA), the Certified Tax Advisor (CTA), and the Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD). These programs are structured according to IFAC and ISAEB guidelines, providing a strong foundation in core accountancy skills and ensuring graduates are globally competitive.

The Institute’s academic offerings cover a wide array of topics including auditing and assurance, taxation, financial planning and reporting, practice management, corporate recovery and insolvency, internal auditing, environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations, and regulatory compliance under the Accountants Act 2013 and Companies Act. It maintains high standards through adherence to global Statements of Membership Obligations (SMOs), covering areas such as quality assurance, international education standards, auditing, ethics, public sector standards, investigation and discipline, and financial reporting. ICPAU emphasizes practical and ethical competence, ensuring that its members and graduates are equipped to drive transparency, good governance, and sustainable value creation in organizations.
