Uganda Petroleum Institute, Kigumba (UPIK) is a government-aided tertiary institution under the Ministry of Education and Sports, established to train skilled technicians for the oil and gas sector. First conceived in 2009 through a Presidential Directive and officially launched by His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on 3rd October 2012, UPIK plays a pivotal role in developing human resource capacity for Uganda’s growing petroleum industry. The Institute’s strategic focus ensures graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of modern energy and industrial operations.

Beyond academics, UPIK encourages students to engage in co-curricular activities that enhance professional competence, leadership, and teamwork. Industrial attachments, field visits, workshops, and seminars allow learners to gain real-world experience and interact with professionals in the oil and gas industry. The Institute also supports student clubs and initiatives aimed at fostering innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration, ensuring that graduates are well-rounded and industry-ready.

Students at Uganda Petroleum Institute, Kigumba (UPIK) engage in  a number of both sports and academic extra curricular activities. The games include; Netball, Football, Basketball, volleyball and Athletics.
The academic extra curricular activities  includes; Guild Council  (GC)Activities, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) activities, Cultural Students’ activities and Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Activities.

UPIK is equipped with modern laboratories, workshops, and training facilities designed to meet international standards. The Institute maintains a quality management system certified under ISO 9001:2015 (Quality), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental), and ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health & Safety). These facilities, combined with practical training equipment and access to industry-standard tools, create a learning environment that prepares students for technical excellence and innovation in the oil and gas sector.

UPIK is committed to excellence, equity, and sustainable development in vocational training for Uganda’s petroleum industry. Governed under the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act of 2001, the Institute operates under a fully constituted Council comprised of accomplished personnel from the oil and gas sector.
