The East African Civil Aviation Academy (EACAA), popularly known as Soroti Flying School, is a premier aviation training institution established in 1971 under the Directorate of Civil Aviation of the East African Community. For more than five decades, the Academy has nurtured and produced world-class aviation professionals who continue to serve in both regional and international industries.
From its humble beginnings with only 20 students in a single building, the Academy has grown into a vibrant center of aviation excellence, now training more than 100 cadets annually.
The Academy provides a broad range of aviation programs designed to meet global standards. These include flight training from beginner levels to advanced instrument and multi-engine ratings, training in aircraft maintenance engineering, and specialized instruction in flight operations and aviation management.
In addition, the Academy runs short professional courses tailored to meet the evolving needs of the industry. All programs are carefully structured to balance theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, ensuring that every graduate is fully equipped with the technical skills, discipline, and professionalism required to thrive in the aviation sector.
At Soroti Flying School, education goes beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of co-curricular activities that promote teamwork, leadership, and resilience. Sports such as football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, and table tennis are available, providing a healthy balance between rigorous academic training and personal growth.
The Academy also hosts seminars, public lectures, workshops, and cultural events in its recreation hall, which serves as a hub for intellectual and social development. Through these activities, cadets are nurtured into well-rounded individuals ready to take on global aviation challenges.
The Academy is built on more than 500 acres of land in Soroti, just a short distance from the town’s taxi and bus parks. The expansive and serene environment, coupled with the favorable weather conditions and a government-maintained meteorological station, makes it an ideal base for aviation training. Students are accommodated in fully furnished single-occupancy rooms within two modern dormitory blocks, each equipped with screened shower booths and lounges fitted with satellite television for relaxation.
Catering is provided through a fully equipped kitchen that serves five balanced meals daily, with protein-rich diets tailored to meet international aviation training standards. The Academy also offers well-equipped classrooms, lecture halls, flight simulators, and a fleet of training aircraft to ensure comprehensive learning. Recreational facilities, including a sports field, swimming access, and a multipurpose recreation hall with a seating capacity of 500, provide cadets with opportunities to unwind and socialize. In addition, communication and safety are enhanced through Uganda Telecom services and HF radio communication provided by the Civil Aviation Authority.
The East African Civil Aviation Academy stands today as a regional center of excellence in aviation training, recognized across East Africa and beyond for its unwavering commitment to safety, professionalism, and innovation. Guided by its mission to provide world-class aviation training and its vision to become the leading aviation academy in East Africa, the institution continues to shape highly competent professionals who contribute significantly to the growth and safety of the global aviation industry.
Supported by the revived East African Community and recognized by international aviation authorities, the Academy ensures that its certifications are globally relevant. Located at Soroti Airport, the Academy offers cadets a unique advantage of training in real-world aviation environments, combining academic rigor with practical exposure.
