Kirinyaga University has its roots in the vision of the people of Kirinyaga, who initiated the Harambee Fundraising Drive in 1971 to establish a technical institution. The institute began operations on March 2, 1977, enrolling its first 72 students in construction and clothing and textile technology. Over the years, new training programs were introduced in plumbing and electrical installation.
In 2011, Kirinyaga University College was established as a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), admitting its first students in September 2012. With the charter granted on October 7, 2016, by President Uhuru Kenyatta, KyU has expanded its academic offerings and now provides a diverse range of degree programs.
