Maseno University, founded in 1991, holds the unique distinction of being the only university in the world located along the Equator (00). As one of the original seven universities in Kenya, it serves as a pivotal institution for higher education in the region.

Maseno University has a rich history that dates back to the merging of Maseno Government Training Institute (GTI) and Siriba Teacher’s Training College to form Maseno University College, a Constituent College of Moi University, in 1990. It achieved full university status in 2001. The university’s name, “Maseno,” originated from a local tree known as “Oseno” or “Oluseno,” near the base of the first missionaries in the region.

Today, Maseno University offers a modern learning experience designed to meet the socio-economic, technological, and innovation needs of Kenya and Eastern Africa. The university also operates enterprises such as Kisumu Hotel and the university farm, which supports its operations and local markets.
