Catholic University of Eastern Africa’s journey began modestly as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA), founded in 1984 by the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA), which comprises countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia. Officially inaugurated by Rt Rev. Bishop Madaldo Mazombwe and blessed by Pope John Paul II, the institute laid the groundwork for what would become a private university.
In 1992, following years of negotiations with the Commission for Higher Education in Kenya, CHIEA received its Civil Charter, marking the establishment of CUEA. The university operates with a clear mission to promote excellence in research, teaching, and community service, guided by the philosophy of seeking the truth about nature, humanity, and God.
