Gayaza High School (GHS) is Uganda’s oldest all-girls boarding secondary school, serving grades 8 to 13 (Senior 1 to 6). Founded by the Church of Uganda and government-aided, the school has a proud tradition of academic excellence and holistic development. Accredited by the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Sports, Gayaza High School has been shaping young women into responsible, capable, and globally minded citizens since its establishment.
At Gayaza High School, academic excellence is both a challenge and a commitment for every student. The school offers both Arts and Sciences at Ordinary and Advanced levels, following the National Curriculum assessed by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB). With ICT-integrated education and hands-on learning approaches, GHS ensures students acquire 21st-century skills including critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. The new Lower Secondary Curriculum (LSC) emphasizes competency-based learning, while the A-Level curriculum bridges theory with practical skills such as research techniques, ICT, and financial literacy.
Gayaza High School provides a wide range of co-curricular activities, including sports, music, debate, drama, charitable projects, religious study groups, clubs, and hobbies such as cookery and dance. These activities enhance students’ personal growth, creativity, and leadership skills. Extra-curricular programs, though voluntary, offer additional opportunities for students to explore their interests and talents beyond the classroom. These experiences, supported by dedicated staff, complement the academic program and foster well-rounded, socially responsible young women.
The school’s historic campus, with its golden-stone buildings, provides an inspiring and safe environment for learning and personal development. Boarding facilities, modern classrooms, ICT labs, sports fields, and recreational areas create a balanced environment for academic and social growth. GHS emphasizes character development, responsibility, and community engagement, ensuring that every student has the support and resources to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Established as the first girls’ school in Uganda, Gayaza High School has a rich heritage rooted in academic rigor, moral development, and a sense of community. From its early days—when girls primarily received religious instruction in Scripture and Catechism—the school has evolved into a modern institution offering both Arts and Sciences education. Its ethos, shaped by founding missionaries and a living tradition of excellence, provides students with a profound sense of identity and purpose. GHS continues to prioritize all-girls boarding education, fostering an environment where students can develop confidence, leadership, and independence.
Vision for the Future
Gayaza High School remains committed to preparing girls for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. By integrating innovative teaching, competency-based learning, and a strong moral foundation, GHS seeks to develop confident, capable, and ethical leaders who contribute positively to society both locally and globally.
