Clarke International University (CIU), formerly known as International Health Sciences University (IHSU), is a licensed institution under the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. Located on the third floor of International Hospital Kampala (IHK) in Namuwongo, CIU is a non-residential university that grooms students to become tomorrow’s leaders both nationally and internationally. The university emphasizes values-based education, critical thinking, leadership, and innovation, preparing students to make meaningful contributions in health, business, technology, and society.
CIU offers a range of undergraduate, graduate, and short courses in fields such as Business Administration, Applied Computing Technologies, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Medicine, Medical Science, Midwifery, and Public Health. Programs are available at certificate, diploma, and bachelor levels. The university emphasizes values-based education, critical thinking, leadership, and innovation, preparing students to contribute meaningfully to communities and global health and business sectors.
The CIU Library serves as a state-of-the-art knowledge hub, supporting research, teaching, and learning with both print and electronic resources. It is a member of the Consortium of Uganda University Libraries (CUUL) and provides a conducive environment for study and research. The university’s ICT department ensures modern technology support for teaching, learning, and research through services in systems, networks, and technical support, including email, internet, telephone, computer labs, and e-resources.
CIU’s evolution from IHSU reflects a bold commitment to innovation, diversity, and interdisciplinary education. Founded in 2005 by Dr. Ian Thomas Clarke, the university began as a small nursing school with just 16 diploma students, pioneering a new standard in healthcare education. Over the years, the university expanded to include the Institute of Public Health and Management, Institute of Allied Health Sciences, Family Medicine, ICT in Health, and the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
On March 6, 2018, CIU officially rebranded to its current identity, embracing a broader curriculum that extends beyond health sciences. The transformation enables the university to offer programs in Health Sciences, Business, Applied Technology, Education, and more, reflecting its commitment to producing value-oriented leaders ready to drive social and economic impact in Uganda and beyond.
The name Clarke—meaning “scholar”—honors Dr. Clarke’s leadership, community engagement, and dedication to sustainable development in Uganda. It embodies CIU’s core mission: to educate responsible, innovative, and globally competent citizens who contribute to improving the quality of life.
CIU fosters a strong sense of community and connection between alumni and current students. The annual Alumni vs. Freshman Football Game is a celebrated tradition that bridges generations, providing mentorship opportunities and fostering camaraderie. Beyond sports, such events strengthen the CIU family, building networks, sharing experiences, and cultivating a sense of belonging that extends beyond graduation.
Scholarships
Recognizing that financial constraints may limit access to education, CIU offers scholarships through the CIU Scholarship Fund and the Rose’s Journey Scholarship Fund (RJSF), helping deserving students achieve their academic and professional aspirations.
