Kampala International University (KIU) is a private, not-for-profit university in Uganda, established in 2001 and chartered in 2009. KIU operates a multi-campus system with the main campus located along Ggaba Road in Kansanga, Kampala, and the School of Health Sciences at the Western Campus in Ishaka, Bushenyi district. Additionally, KIU has campuses in Kenya and Tanzania, providing students with the opportunity to pursue higher education in a diverse, international environment. KIU is recognized by the Government of Uganda, and its academic qualifications are internationally recognized, enabling students to continue education or practice professionally worldwide.
KIU offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional programs across multiple disciplines including Health Sciences, Science and Technology, Engineering, Business and Management, Law, Humanities, and Education. Academic programs are delivered on a semester system, except for specific courses such as Access Programs, Health Sciences, In-service Education courses, and the Executive MBA.
The university is structured into schools, faculties, and colleges, including the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of Digital, Distance and E-Learning, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Business and Management, and the Faculty of Clinical Medicine and Dentistry, among others. KIU emphasizes practical, hands-on learning to ensure graduates are well-prepared for the job market.
KIU encourages students to engage in co-curricular activities that complement their academic learning and develop leadership, creativity, and professional skills. Activities include participation in student-run media, entrepreneurship programs, research projects, internships, and community outreach initiatives. The main campus houses ultramodern libraries with a seating capacity of over 5,000, wireless internet, and access to online journals and publications. The Western Campus includes a teaching hospital with a 22-bed in-patient ward, maternal and family planning clinic, and specialized medical training facilities. Computer and science laboratories, research institutes, and centers for entrepreneurship and innovation provide students with practical experience and skills development. KIU’s infrastructure ensures a conducive learning environment that fosters both academic and professional growth.
KIU’s vision is to cultivate the next generation of problem-solvers for Africa and beyond, with a strong commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and international collaboration. The university is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of African Universities, and the Inter-University Council of East Africa. KIU has trained over 1,200 medical professionals and thousands of graduates who are employable globally. The university also provides bursary scholarships, including half-tuition awards for qualifying Ugandan students recommended by their district authorities, demonstrating its commitment to widening access to higher education.
