The Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) was established as an association of Professional Engineers of Uganda in 1972, as a successor to the defunct East Africa Institution of Engineers (EAIE), which had started in 1945 .
The objectives and purposes of the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers are to promote the general advancement of the science and practice of engineering and its applications, and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas on those subjects amongst the members of the Institution.
Vision: To be the leading professional organization in the region advocating for the best standards of engineering practice for sustainable development and the betterment of mankind.
Mission: The mission of UIPE is to promote higher engineering standards and the development and integration of engineering science and practice into public policy in Uganda.
Objectives, Mission, Vision and Core Values of UIPE
UIPE plays a vital role in professional education and training through structured programs designed to enhance technical competence and ethical practice in the engineering field. The institution provides both Initial Professional Development (IPD) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programs that help young graduates and practicing engineers refine their skills, stay updated with evolving technologies, and align with global engineering standards.
These programs target students, technologists, and technicians, equipping them with the knowledge and experience necessary to thrive in Uganda’s growing engineering and industrial sectors.
Beyond technical training, UIPE emphasizes mentorship, networking, and leadership development among its members. The institution organizes conferences, workshops, and forums that allow members to share experiences, discuss innovations, and collaborate on national and international projects.
Through these engagements, UIPE fosters a sense of community and encourages the exchange of ideas that inspire sustainable engineering solutions. The institution also takes deliberate steps to promote gender inclusivity, with a focus on encouraging more women to pursue and excel in engineering careers.
UIPE’s Secretariat serves as the administrative and operational center of the institution, providing members with access to resources, information, and support services. The Secretariat coordinates professional development programs, membership services, and policy advocacy initiatives that strengthen the engineering profession in Uganda.
Through its branches across the country, UIPE provides platforms for regional engagement, ensuring that members in different areas have access to training, mentorship, and networking opportunities. These facilities and structures enable the institution to effectively fulfill its mandate of promoting engineering excellence and advancing national development.
Today, UIPE stands as one of Uganda’s most influential professional organizations, representing over 7,400 members across various engineering disciplines. It operates under a constitution and is governed by a Council of 18 members led by a President, supported by Vice Presidents, Branch Executives, and a Secretariat headed by an Executive Secretary. The institution’s structure ensures accountability, transparency, and inclusivity in decision-making.
UIPE works closely with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) to ensure that corporate members meet professional standards required for registration and legal practice in Uganda. Through this partnership, the institution continues to uphold high ethical standards, technical competence, and professional responsibility among engineers nationwide.
