Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is a faith-based private university owned by the Episcopal Conference of the Catholic Bishops of Uganda. Located on Nkozi Hill, approximately 82 kilometers west of Kampala along the Kampala-Masaka Highway, UMU was founded to provide high-quality education guided by ethical and Catholic values.
The university draws inspiration from the late Archbishop Joseph Kiwanuka, regarded as the Father of Catholic Higher Education in Uganda, and is committed to producing graduates equipped to lead with wisdom, integrity, and social responsibility. UMU operates with a strong emphasis on academic excellence, community engagement, and holistic student development.
Uganda Martyrs University offers a broad range of academic programs, including undergraduate, postgraduate, master’s, and PhD degrees across multiple disciplines. The seven faculties, one institute, and associated centers provide diverse programs in fields such as business, education, health sciences, law, and social sciences.
UMU’s curriculum is designed to combine theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing students to excel in their chosen professions while upholding ethical standards and contributing meaningfully to their communities.
UMU emphasizes holistic student development beyond academics. Students are encouraged to engage in faith-based activities, community service, leadership programs, and various cultural and social initiatives. These co-curricular programs foster teamwork, leadership, and ethical responsibility, equipping students to become active and compassionate members of society.
International and local student exchanges, outreach programs, and community service projects also provide opportunities for experiential learning and cross-cultural engagement.
UMU offers state-of-the-art facilities to support academic excellence and student life. The Archbishop Kiwanuka Library, located at the main Nkozi campus, provides access to a vast collection of books, research materials, and digital resources. The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Department ensures students and staff have reliable internet and email access and promotes computer literacy across all faculties.
The university provides comfortable and affordable hostel accommodation, including thirteen single-sex halls of residence on the main campus, while branch campuses also offer supervised student housing. These facilities create an environment conducive to learning, research, and personal growth.
UMU is nationally and internationally recognized for its commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community service. Since opening its doors on October 18, 1993, with just 84 students, UMU has grown significantly and now operates across eight campuses, including Nkozi (main campus), Lubaga, Nsambya, Kabale, Moyo, Mbale, Soroti, Mbarara, Lira, and Kisubi.
The university currently has seven faculties, one institute, four centers, five departments, and two schools, serving over 4,600 students. About 1,200 students reside on campus, while approximately 3,700 participate in distance learning programs. UMU’s mission is to provide quality higher education and research guided by ethical values, ensuring graduates are prepared to contribute positively to society.
