In a region where many children struggle to attend school due to poverty and long travel distances, Margaret Junior School stands as a symbol of opportunity, compassion, and resilience. With dedicated teachers, supportive families, and international partners, the school continues to nurture young minds and create a brighter future for every learner it serves.

Margaret Junior School Academics

Margaret Junior School provides a comprehensive primary education that aligns with Uganda’s National Primary Curriculum, emphasizing literacy, numeracy, and life skills. Sports and physical education are also encouraged, promoting fitness and teamwork. Pupils engage in games such as football, netball, and athletics, which strengthen social bonds and build discipline. Additionally, vocational and life skills training programs help prepare older pupils for future opportunities, particularly through the Vocational Training Block established with government and donor support.

Through these activities, Margaret Junior School continues to shape well-rounded, confident, and responsible young citizens who can make positive contributions to their communities.

Margaret Junior School Facilities

Despite its modest beginnings, Margaret Junior School Masaka has grown into a well-equipped institution that provides a safe and supportive environment for learning. The school now sits on its own land, ensuring long-term stability and room for future expansion. It features two classroom blocks with multiple learning spaces, pit latrines and washrooms for staff and pupils, a fully equipped kitchen, and a multi-purpose dining hall that also serves as an examination room.

Essential infrastructure such as solar power and rainwater harvesting tanks ensures reliable lighting and clean water supply, even in rural conditions. The school’s playground provides space for sports and recreational activities, while the provision of mosquito nets for all pupils enhances health and safety.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters and the hard work of the local community, the school has continued to expand its facilities — from piped water systems and vocational training blocks to playground equipment, traditional drums, and dance costumes that bring joy and cultural pride to the pupils.

Every facility at Margaret Junior School reflects a shared vision of providing children—especially orphans and the disabled—with a nurturing, inclusive, and empowering learning environment.

Margaret Junior School History

Margaret Junior School was founded in 2004 by Kasujja Sarah, a retired Deputy Headteacher, who was deeply moved by the educational challenges faced by children in her village. Many were orphans or physically disabled and unable to attend school due to distance and lack of support. Determined to make a difference, Sarah built a classroom onto her home, expecting 30 pupils—but within a week, 90 children were enrolled, marking the humble beginning of a remarkable journey.

Over time, the school grew steadily, serving more than 300 pupils, the majority being orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS or disability. Following Sarah’s vision, her son Danny Mutebi, a qualified lawyer, now serves as the school’s Director, continuing her legacy with dedication and love.

To ensure the school’s sustainability and development, The Friends of Margaret Junior School was established in 2006 as a registered charity in the UK. With generous support from organizations such as the Lions International, The Waterloo Foundation, and well-wishers, the school has achieved significant milestones. These include the purchase of land to secure ownership, installation of piped water, construction of classrooms, provision of solar energy, and supply of essential learning materials.

Though the school mourns the loss of its beloved founder, Mrs. Kasujja Sarah, who passed away in 2021 due to COVID-19, her vision lives on through the committed staff, students, and supporters who continue to uphold her dream of education for all.
