Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa Academics

IHPCA offers a diverse range of academic and professional programs designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills. The main academic programs include: Bachelor of Science in Palliative Care, Diploma in Palliative Care, and Diploma in Clinical Palliative Care (DCPC).

In addition, the Institute provides short and specialized courses such as the Health Professionals’ Course (HPC) and the Traditional Healers’ Course, along with tailored trainings to meet the diverse needs of healthcare providers and organizations. Through these programs, IHPCA builds capacity in holistic care and integrates palliative care into broader health systems.

Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa History

The Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa (IHPCA) is the education arm of Hospice Africa Uganda, dedicated to advancing knowledge and practice in palliative care. We are a one-specialty institute fully accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in 2009 and proudly affiliated with Makerere University since 2003.

IHPCA provides specialized palliative care training for individuals, organizations, and institutions seeking to integrate palliative care into their programs. Interested organizations are encouraged to submit training requests through Hospice Africa Uganda, preferably in September each year.

At IHPCA, students gain more than just academic qualifications—they embrace a calling to care. Our student-centered approach emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, supported by individual mentorship. Learners come from across sub-Saharan Africa, united by a shared mission to provide compassionate care to patients facing life-threatening illnesses and support to their families.
