Archbishop Kiwanuka Primary School

About

Curriculum:

Archbishop Kiwanuka Primary School school was established in Nakirebe village in 1960 in memory of Archbishop Joseph Kiwanuka, the first African bishop in sub-Saharan Africa. His home was in Nakirebe and he was a tireless worker for education for the African population. The school has 840 pupils and is staffed by 20 teachers. Eleven are paid by the government and earn 193,000 shillings ($113) per month. The other nine are paid by the community and earn 50,000 shillings ($29) per month.

The government grant in the last full year was 2,000,000 shillings ($1,175). Archbishop Kiwanuka Primary School was taken over by the Catholic Church in 2003 and since then has grown from 217 pupils to the current number, as the parents now have much greater confidence in the quality of the education their children will receive. This great increase in enrolment, however, has led to many problems – a lack of classrooms, desks, teachers’ accommodation, water and electricity.

There are 150 boarders ( 60 of whom are orphans) but only 18 pay the full fees of 100,000 shillings ($60) per term. The school grows some of its own food to supplement the fees and charges each pupil 5,500 shillings ($3) per term for extras.P.O. Box 107 Nakirebe Mpigi, Central Region Uganda
