The sub county is very deprived and the Kithoma High School was the first secondary school in Buhuhira Sub County to serve the eight local primary schools. The area has a very young population and the hilly terrain makes it difficult for students to travel long distances to far away schools, making the PEAS school at Kithoma vitally important. There is a very positive attitude towards education among local people who believe that education will enable them to make the most of the natural resources in the area. The District Education Officer was particularly keen for PEAS to build a school in Kithoma as it would fulfil the District Council Resolution requiring all sub counties to have a secondary school.
