Samling Kichwamba High School is one of eight PEAS secondary schools in Uganda that opened to students for the first time on 4th February 2013. It is situated in Kichwamba Sub County, an area in the same district as PEAS Samling High School, Kabarole.
PEAS(Promoting Equality in African Schools) identified Kichwamba as another community in Kabarole district that was in desperate need of a quality, affordable secondary school. Kichamba has 13 primary schools, but the only previously secondary school was located in the far corner of the sub-county. According to the local education office, few students want to attend the school due to its high fees and poor reputation, in addition to its remote location. What’s more, the existing school does not have sufficient enrolment and facilities to meet the needs of the sub-county. In 2011, 380 primary school leavers were eligible for Universal Secondary Education subsidies; enrolment for the first year of secondary school was only 100.
PEAS aims for 50% of its students to be girls, a target that should offer an alternative future to girls in an area where the practice of early marriage and early pregnancies is common.
Before the launch of Samling Kichwamba PEAS High School, only 27.8% of girls in Kabarole District were in school. At this school that ratio is 58%.
The school was kindly funded by The Danson Foundation and construction and the school is led by Director Deogratias Kabagambe, and Head Teacher James Glenn Musiga.
