Rising Star Junior School is a nurturing educational institution located approximately 30 miles northwest of Kampala in Wakiso District, Uganda. Rising Star follows the Uganda government curriculum, which includes:
Core subjects: English, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies
Additional subjects: Music, Dance, Drama, Physical Education, and Christian Religious Education
The school also encourages participation in after-school programs and clubs, including: Passport Club (world geography and cultures), Art & Craft Club, Reading/Writing Club, Choir, Dance, and various sports activities. A Sunday worship service is held for boarders.
Campuses
Nursery School Campus: Home to the youngest students (ages 3+), with Baby, Middle, and Top classes totaling 140 students. The focus is on preparing children for Primary School through foundational learning and development.
Primary School Campus: The main campus serves 340 students from Primary 1 to Primary 7. It emphasizes academic excellence, Christian values, and a wide variety of extracurricular activities to ensure holistic development and readiness for secondary education.
Rising Star Junior School was officially opened in February 2012 with 295 students, growing to over 370 students with a dedicated teaching staff. The school operates on a model that combines child sponsorships from the US with reduced tuition fees for families who can contribute, ensuring all students have access to meals, scholastic materials, and safe housing for nearly 50 children on campus. Rising Star aims to provide opportunities to children who would otherwise not have access to quality education.
The school’s origins trace back to 2008 when Ryan Kaminski, inspired by his experiences teaching in Uganda, envisioned a school for orphaned and vulnerable children. Rising Star officially formed as a non-profit organization in 2012, opening its doors with 295 students. The school has since expanded, opening additional classes and planning to grow through secondary school to meet the community’s needs.
