The founding of Mengo Senior School dates back to 1895, when missionaries recognized formal education as a strategic approach to evangelism. The school began as an elementary mixed school called Kayanja, with lessons conducted in the house of Miss Chadwick, one of the founding teachers. Initially, students were mostly young men serving as houseboys for missionaries, who later helped recruit children from local communities.
In 1901, Charles William Hattersley took over as teacher and the school expanded, including boarding facilities provided by the Katikkiro, Sir Apollo Kaggwa. Over the years, the school grew rapidly, attracting students from Buganda and other regions of Uganda. By 1904, the Church Missionary Society established Mengo High School as a boarding school for the sons of chiefs, formally opened in 1905 by His Majesty’s Acting Commissioner.
The school eventually split into junior and senior sections, with the senior section becoming Mengo Central School. Over the years, Mengo Senior School has been led by a distinguished succession of headteachers, continuing to evolve as one of Uganda’s top academic institutions while fostering holistic development for its students.
