St. Peter’s Senior Secondary School, Nsambya (SPENSA) is a government-aided, mixed day secondary school on Nsambya Hill in Kampala, offering both O-Level and A-Level education under the Uganda National Curriculum. The school traces its roots to 1907, when the Mill Hill Missionaries founded a mission school on the site, using what later became known locally as the “Fort Jesus” building as its first classroom block. It was recognised as a full Senior Secondary School in 1948 and became government-aided in 1983, and today sits under the foundation body of the Archdiocese of Kampala.
The school’s own site describes it as “a school with a mission and a heart,” committed to “quality education rooted in faith, discipline and hardwork,” and pairs that with one of the country’s oldest continuous school traditions: in 1909 it formed Uganda’s first brass band, still active today alongside a long-standing football and baseball programme. With more than 2,000 students currently enrolled, it is one of Kampala’s larger Catholic-founded day schools.

SPENSA offers the full O-Level and A-Level programme under UNEB. In the 2023 UCE examinations, the school registered 138 first-grade results and was ranked the 59th best school in Uganda nationally — a result the school’s own reporting credits to continued investment in its science laboratories, library and teaching staff under long-serving headteacher Remigius Mubiru Mungere, and more recently under headmistress Elizabeth Asiimwe.

Alongside its brass band and football tradition, the school has partnered with American Tower Corporation, which built a new computer lab and basketball court on campus as part of its Digital Community IT Learning Centre programme. The school has also partnered with the neighbouring US Embassy for community mentorship events reaching over a thousand students, and recently hosted an inter-house debate as part of its regular student events.
St. Peter’s Senior Secondary School Nsambya Facilities
The school’s science block — physics, biology and chemistry laboratories, plus an ICT laboratory and additional classrooms — was built under the African Development Bank’s Phase IV education project, with a further storey funded by parents. Facilities also include a stocked library, sick bay, standby generator, safe piped water, and the computer laboratory and basketball court built in partnership with American Tower Corporation.
