Kalinabiri Secondary School

About

Curriculum: Uganda National Examinations Board Curriculum (UNEB)

Kalinabiri Secondary School is a government-aided, mixed secondary school in Ntinda, Kampala, offering both O-Level and A-Level education. It was established by the Government of Uganda in 1984 with the explicit aim of spreading equitable and accessible secondary education, beginning inside Kalinabiri Primary School with classes held in a single classroom and, at times, under trees — starting with just eleven pioneer students.

In 1985 the late Ernest Kayanja donated 2.93 acres of land to the school, later adding a further 0.89 acres; the school subsequently purchased another 0.59 acres, forming the campus it occupies today. The school’s motto, “Determined To Excel With Trust In God,” reflects the same resourcefulness that has defined its history.

Kalinabiri Secondary School Academics

Kalinabiri has become locally known for a distinctive, resource-light approach to science teaching: rather than a single permanent laboratory, the school built a “mobile laboratory,” moving equipment and chemicals between classrooms and a secure store — an approach that drew attention from the Ministry of Education and Sports as an innovative model for schools without large capital budgets.

Kalinabiri Secondary School Facilities

The campus includes a single-storey classroom block, Science and Arts exhibition halls, a kitchen and kitchen shed (the latter donated by Concern for the Girl Child), a school van, and a library. The school’s five houses are named after African historical figures: Kabalega, Musaazi, Nkrumah, Nyerere and Kayanja.
