Mackay Memorial College is a government-aided, mixed secondary school in Nateete, Kampala, offering both O-Level and A-Level education with a small boarding section alongside its main day programme. It was founded in 1967 on a private basis and became government-aided in 1980, taking its name from Alexander Murdoch Mackay, the Scottish missionary, teacher and engineer who contributed to education in 19th-century Uganda and is buried in Namirembe, Kampala. Its motto, “Temudda Nnyuma,” means “no retrogression.”
The school sits within the vicinity of Mackay Church of Uganda, Nateete, and describes its vision as being “a Christian centre of excellence in holistic education.”
Mackay Memorial College Academics
In the 2023 UCE results, Mackay registered 64 first-grade (Division One) passes — described at the time as the first result of its kind in the school’s recent history. Under former headteacher Mary Mukasa Kalyango (2022–2025), more than 20 students obtained government university sponsorship and hundreds more secured private sponsorship, alongside a rise in enrolment from around 1,200 to 1,900 students.
Mackay Memorial College Co-curricular
The school runs a small student piggery, an organic vegetable-growing project led by a biology teacher, and a briquette-making project aimed at building self-employment skills, alongside football, netball, volleyball, cricket, music, dance, drama and scouting.
Mackay Memorial College Facilities
Facilities include a renovated science laboratory and library, dormitories, classrooms, and a fenced, CCTV-monitored compound. The college has also received grants totalling $4,400 from Teachers for East Africa Alumni (TEAA) for computers, instructor training and books, and holds an eGranary Digital Library.
Mackay Memorial College History
- 1967 — Founded privately.
- 1980 — Became government-aided.
- 2014 — Won the School Enterprise Challenge at district and national level, and then-headteacher Mrs. Ssekabira received the Tumaini Lifetime Achievement Award.
- 2001–2021 — Gertrude Sekabira served as headteacher until her death from COVID-19 in January 2021.
- 2022–2025 — Under headteacher Mary Mukasa Kalyango, the school renovated its dormitories, science laboratory and library, fenced the compound with CCTV, and expanded vocational offerings to include electrical installation, tailoring, bakery and hairdressing.
