Maryhill High School (MHS) is a Catholic-founded girls’ O’ & A-level boarding school located on Nyamitanga Hill in Mbarara District. Established in 1961 by Rt. Rev Bishop Mary Ogez with the Daughters of Mary and Joseph (DMJ), the school was founded to promote the education of the girl child in Western Uganda. MHS provides a nurturing and disciplined environment that emphasizes academic excellence, moral values, and holistic development. With over 1,100 students and a dedicated staff team, the school combines tradition with modern learning approaches. Its mission is to develop responsible, skilled, and reflective young women who contribute meaningfully to society.
Maryhill High School offers a full and varied curriculum including traditional subjects and practical courses such as Agriculture, Computer Studies, Typing and Office Practice, Home Management, Needlework, Commerce, and Art & Craft. The school prepares students for UNEB examinations at both O’Level and A’Level. Academic programs are complemented by structured study time in a well-stocked library, allowing students to revise, research, and develop independent learning skills. Teachers emphasize critical thinking, creativity, and reflective learning to produce competent and confident graduates.
MHS encourages students to participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities to enhance skills beyond the classroom. Sports include football, netball, volleyball, cricket, track and field events, and indoor games such as chess, table tennis, scrabble, and drafts. Cultural activities include music, dance, drama, and inter-colour competitions, where students showcase talent in speech, African instrumental composition, and singing. The school also promotes social clubs, academic clubs, debating, scouting, and farming activities like gardening and piggery.
The school campus provides a conducive learning environment with modern classrooms, dormitories for boarding students, science laboratories, and a library that supports private study and research. Sports facilities include pitches, courts, and indoor game areas to support physical development. Additional infrastructure includes halls for assemblies and cultural events, dining facilities, and spaces for social and academic clubs. The school’s environment is designed to ensure students’ physical and mental well-being while encouraging personal growth and leadership development.
Welfare & Infrastructure
MHS places strong emphasis on the welfare of both students and staff, promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Over the years, the school has expanded its infrastructure to accommodate over 1,300 students while maintaining a safe and supportive environment. Programs in health, guidance, and counseling ensure holistic development and address the needs of the school community. The infrastructure supports both academic and extra-curricular excellence, fostering a balanced and enriching learning experience for all students.
MHS has a proud history of fostering all-round discipline, hard work, and determination among its students. The school’s vision is to cultivate confident, educated, and socially responsible women leaders. It emphasizes a strong moral and intellectual foundation while encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and personal growth.
