Mbarara High School | MHS History

Founded in 1911 by Anglican Christian missionaries affiliated with the Church of England, Mbarara High School is the oldest secondary school in Western Uganda. The campus is situated approximately two kilometers west of Mbarara’s central business district along the Mbarara-Ishaka Road. While the East Ankole Diocese of the Church of Uganda owns the land and maintains control of the school, the Uganda Government, through the Ministry of Education, contributes to its budget. MHS has played a significant role in the social and cultural history of the region, including being a focal point for the Kumanyana protest movement in the 1940s, which sought equality for the Bairu people of Ankole.
