Nakasero Senior School
About
Curriculum: Uganda National Examinations Board Curriculum (UNEB)
Nakasero Senior School is a private, non-denominational, mixed secondary school on Kabaka Anjagala Road in the Mengo/Rubaga area of Kampala, offering both O-Level and A-Level education under the UNEB curriculum, with day and boarding places available. The school has been recognised for an early and unusually deliberate embrace of technology in the classroom: it has allowed Senior One and Two students to carry smartphones into supervised lessons since 2020, ahead of most Ugandan schools, as part of implementing the country’s revised, more hands-on lower secondary curriculum.
Under former headteacher Lawrence Kaddu Kasibante, the school described the policy candidly as managing a “necessary evil” — phones are registered and deposited with school administration and issued only for supervised lesson use — and its Director of Studies, Godfrey Mubiru, has said the goal was to support “learner-centred, hands-on” teaching under the new curriculum.
Nakasero Senior School Academics
The school offers science combinations (including Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics and Biology/Chemistry/Mathematics) and arts combinations at A-Level, alongside the standard O-Level programme. In February 2025, the school hosted the launch of Good Neighbors Uganda’s Global Citizenship Education Program, with 90 students taking part.
Nakasero Senior School Alumni
Ugandan musician and radio presenter Angela Kalule attended Nakasero SS for part of her secondary education, as did gospel musician Rebecca “Becky” Jingo, who completed her O-Level studies at the school before moving to Mengo Senior School for A-Level.
